“It’s not about what I want,” Remy said quietly. “It’s… it’s the interrogators. After the hotel, they didn’t really think I’d been involved, so they didn’t come at me very hard. But I’ve seen what they do to people who are actually suspected of something. Truth drugs, absolutely, but also anything else they can think of. Everyone talks. I’d talk.”

“And he knows your name,” Dar said sadly. “It wouldn’t matter if he gave me up; I’m already a fugitive. But you… you’re important, Adam.” He looked shiftily at Remy and added, “I mean, you’re useful yourself, but your money… we can’t afford to lose access to your money.” He looked at Remy again. “If I’d known you knew him, I never would have come to your window. I swear.”

Remy nodded. That was something. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out the little envelope that he’d started carrying with him like a lucky charm. “I have pills. Enough to kill me. I could take them if I knew the security forces were coming….”

“But you won’t know they’re coming,” Dar said, and Remy just nodded. “No. Nobody’s taking pills, and nobody’s being interrogated, and sure as hell nobody is being killed just because he recognizes me. That is….” Challoner looked fiercely at Dar. “That is not acceptable. I will not be a part of anything like that. Innocent people being killed—”

“What about the pilots?” Remy asked quietly. “At the hotel. Twelve upstanding citizens killed… that’s what all the news reports talk about. But three shuttles exploded. That’s three pilots, and probably some security guards, some assistants… who knows how many other people.” Challoner looked sick, but Remy kept talking. “Innocent people have already been killed. You sat there in your hotel suite and waited, knowing it was going to happen? And then you went up on the roof and hung back so you wouldn't be on one of the shuttles?" It was the only thing that made sense, even if it was hard to reconcile that level of duplicity with sweet, innocent Challoner. "And if people have figured out that the cameras are off tonight, probably some more innocent people have died, because the cameras don’t just catch terrorists, they also catch criminals. There could be rioting in the streets, for all we know.” There were only a few keys left untried, and Dar impatiently pulled the ring out of Remy’s hands and started working on the lock himself.

Challoner seemed to have lost interest in the entire process, focusing on Remy with almost frightening intensity. “So what are you saying? We should do nothing? Just sit back and let them win? Should I have… was I wrong to be part of the shuttle explosions? Yes, I was part of it. And….” He nodded as if his neck had stiffened in resistance and he had to force the muscles to comply. "It wasn't my idea, but I knew it was going to happen. I knew people were going to die. It was important to the cause.
